Do you know what you want? Does anybody? It usually requires self-awareness to understand what ‘want’ even means.
Things always pop into mind when we mention ‘want’ – more money, better job, more sleep. But, other than the sleep thing, how can we define ‘more money’ and ‘better job’? How much is ‘more’? What exactly is ‘better’?
If we can define our goals, it’s so much easier to make changes. We need to be clear about what we truly want as individuals.
For example, “I want more money” is vague. There are several ways to achieve that goal – you can reduce credit card debt or change investment strategies. Even rob a bank. There are all sorts of choices. But without knowing yourself, your situation, and the life you’re trying to reach, how can you make the right one?
Even the desire to ‘get a better job’. The word ‘better’ is totally subjective. Be clear about what you like and don’t like about your current job. This is important to figure out what you should look for in a new one.
All of this comes down to self-awareness. Knowing who you are based on where you’ve been and what has happened along the way. At a certain point, the choices we make become our responsibility. We must take ownership of them, both the bad and the good. Those choices have an enormous impact on who we are at this very moment.
If you want to ‘get more money’ (or any other material possession), first know who you are. Then decide where you want to be. It’s the same with getting a ‘better job’. Assess where you are at that moment. Then, you can find the best path to achieve your goal of getting what you want. Or what you need.
